Sewage treatment plants are a requirement on all ships of 400 gross tonnes and above and also for small ships that are certified to carry 15 or more passengers.
The current regulation for sewage treatment falls under Annex IV MARPOL 73/78. This regulation imposed a modest level of on board treatment, capable of being met by rudimentary treatment plants. Surprisingly, this requirement only came into force in September 2003 for new build ships, with existing ships having until 2008 to comply.
As noted, the quality of the treated water is modest and to address this, the IMO have ratified more stringent treatment standards for on board sewage treatment plants under Resolution MEPC 159 (55). This new standard will enter into force 1st January 2010 and apply to all new ships of the stated tonnage.
These new regulations may render many current treatment plants obsolete, since their rudimentary designs may not allow re-certification.
To address the issue, EFLO have drawn on their previous experience in the marine market as well as modern technologies from land based sewage treatment plants to develop the EFLO SHIP ES range.
The EFLO SHIP ES range has Submerged Aerated Filter technology at it's heart, with additional advances of Constant Transfer for flow balancing and lamella settlement. SAF technology significantly increases biological activity in the plant for a much reduced foot print.
EFLO are very aware of the harsh environment that marine systems have to operate in. With this in mind, you will not find any screens or delicate membranes in the EFLO SHIP plants. Instead, the technology used is robust, low maintenance and well proven on land based applications.
